In Memory of Michael Burawoy (1947–2025)
The International Sociological Association (ISA) mourns the tragic passing of Michael Burawoy, a leading sociologist, Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley, and 17th President of ISA (2010–2014). A tireless advocate for public sociology, Michael dedicated his life to advancing sociology as a tool for understanding and transforming society. He was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident on February 3, 2025. His loss is immeasurable.
The ISA, joined by the American Sociological Association from which Michael Burawoy was also president (2004), invites the global community of sociologists, scholars, and social actors to an online tribute to celebrate his life and legacy on Saturday, February 8, at 17:00h UTC. Join us on Zoom or follow the YouTube live transmission.
A Life Committed to Sociology and Justice
A pre-eminent scholar, researcher, teacher, mentor, advocate, and friend, Michael Burawoy shaped global sociology with his insights on labor, social movements, and inequality. His work, deeply rooted in lived experience—including months spent working in factories—provided a unique and critical perspective on class struggles.
As ISA President, Michael championed public sociology, fostering dialogue across disciplines, societies, and borders. His leadership strengthened ISA’s global mission, making sociology more accessible and relevant to contemporary challenges. His boundless energy, commitment to justice, and unwavering belief in sociology’s power to transform the world will continue to inspire generations.
Founder of Global Dialogue
Michael’s vision extended beyond conventional academic boundaries. As the founder of Global Dialogue, ISA’s online magazine, he established a platform for sociologists around the world to share ideas, research, and reflections on pressing social issues. Global Dialogue, translated into more than a dozen languages by teams of sociologists globally, embodies his commitment to inclusive, multilingual, and globally engaged sociology.
Honoring his Legacy
- ISA President Geoffrey Pleyers, in a letter to members that Global Dialogue has published, has written a tribute celebrating Michael's invaluable legacy to global sociology and the ISA in particular, expressing the sudden mourning and huge void that the global community of sociologists had.
- Further tributes will be held during the ISA World Forum of Sociology (July 7-11) in Rabat, Morocco, along with initiatives undertaken by our Research Committees, Working Groups, and Thematic Groups.
A Lasting Impact
Michael’s leadership and passion leave a profound mark on the ISA and the global sociological community more generally. We will always remember his guidance, generosity, and unique enthusiasm. His work, ideas, and spirit will continue to inspire us.
We invite you to listen again to his Presidential address at the 2014 ISA World Congress in Yokohama, where he offered his vision for sociology, global dialogue, and justice.
As a tribute, we have made open access to the article of this address and all his other contributions in Current Sociology.
Rest in power, Michael.
